Major Moisture for Many Climates

April 28th, 2011

Many of us treat our skin differently depending on the weather and although most of us are aware of the benefits of keeping skin moisturized, some of us still skip out on daily moisturizer once warmer weather moves in. Not okay.

I know it’s during the dry cold winter that extra dry skin is especially uncomfortable, but moisturizing is an every day, every season must!

Book Review: On the Wings of Self Esteem

When you feel good about yourself, you look good too.  It is a fact.  Confidence is the best kept beauty secret.

Yes! Got to agree with that. Check out the review of On the Wings of Self Esteem for the rest of the story.

Witch Hazel – An Ideal Facial Toner for Smooth, Healthy Skin

April 28th, 2011

Nature has a way of providing some of the best medicines. Dry skin, puffy eyes, and open pores all respond to the natural compounds found in witch hazel. That’s why natural facial toners based on it have been so popular for so long.

Witch hazel keeps skin healthy and glowing. Healthy skin looks soft, radiant, and firm. When used as a facial toner, it tightens the skin cells and reduces pore size to create a smooth, flawless completion. The astringent properties wash away excess oils and dead skin cells to refresh and brighten your skin, while the natural stimulating and anti-inflammatory properties reduce swelling and stimulate circulation close to the skin’s surface. Putting this natural extract on your face and body helps keep skin healthy and glowing while healing any minor problem areas.

For skin that needs extra healing, a witch hazel facial toner is ideal. It was traditionally used to treat a whole host of skin problems and is still valued for its external healing properties. It has long been used on bedsores, insect bites, cuts, and cracked skin to clean the area and heal the wounds.  Anti-inflammatory properties help clear up poison ivy and poison oak, psoriasis, eczema, and other skin rashes. Blemishes and infections respond to the deep cleansing properties of witch hazel, along with the antimicrobial, anti-fungal, and antibacterial elements.  The stimulating elements of its extract can also help to revive tired muscles and heal bruises.

The tree grows in the forests of the North Eastern areas of North America where it has been a part of Native American medicine for hundreds of years. When early settlers came to the shores of the East Coast, the people learned some of their medicinal lore from the Native people. Witch hazel is one of the American Indian healing plants that has remained in common use in the health and beauty industry.

Splashing a little on your face or adding it to your favorite natural facial toner, brightens, tightens, and cleanses your skin. Look to witch hazel  to add nature’s healing compounds to your daily home skin care routine. And keep the bottle on hand to treat minor skin infections, blemishes, bruises, cracks, and swellings. It has been tested by time as a beauty and medicinal aid for a glowing complexion.

Just be sure the witch hazel you use is free of alcohol. Some extracts commonly contain 14% alcohol, and, especially if you have dry skin, you don’t want to be putting alcohol onto your face!

Starting on the path to health, first believe in yourself and then take that step

April 27th, 2011

Why do you think you can just start making a few changes to your food, skincare or lifestyle and then give up when it appears to “not be working.”

Perhaps it is due to there being no boundaries, you feel out of control and unsure if what you are doing is right, there is so much conflicting information?

Here’s a good article about how to make healthy changes in your lifestyle. The whole challenge of improving our wellness (and our appearance) can seem overwhelming. There’s so much to think about, we sometimes don’t know where to start. So we don’t do anything. This article has excellent tips on how to get started and make the changes you want.
It’s one of the reasons why I emphasize simple skin care – nothing elaborate by way of products – all you need are 4; and not time consuming – just a minute twice a day is all it takes to revitalize even extra dry skin.

Tropical blueberries are extreme super fruits

April 27th, 2011

The first analysis of the healthful antioxidant content of blueberries that grow wild in Mexico, Central and South America concludes that some of these fruits have even more healthful antioxidants than the blueberries — already renowned as “super fruits” — sold throughout the United States. These extreme super fruits could provide even more protection against heart disease, cancer and other conditions, the report suggests. It appears in ACS’ Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

This is really interesting – blueberries that grow wild are more potent that those that are farmed, even those that are farmed organically. I’ve always favored wild-harvested ingredients for my products, when they are available, such as the shea butter that I use in my organic moisturizer.

Health and Beauty Benefits of Orange

April 26th, 2011

Though, I am very well aware of the importance of a balance diet or say vegetables yet, I have not accepted them completely. I still have to toil very hard to finish my quota of vegetables everyday. But, as far as fruits are concerned I eat them as if I’ll be dead next day.

Nice article about oranges in today’s Indian Makeup & Beauty Blog. The valley here is filled with the scent of orange blossoms. Intoxicating, actually. And oranges are so good for us. Check out the post for all the details, but know that an orange a day is a really good and delicious idea. It’s best to eat the whole fruit, rather than just the juice.

What Your Nail Polish Says About You

April 26th, 2011

The colors we choose to wear can sometimes serve as more than just a trend. They say you are what you eat but, when it comes to style, what you wear can be an expression of who you are and how you feel. But going beyond the closet, your true colors can come through in other ways, such as your nail polish (really!). Have you ever wondered why your outgoing best friend is the queen of hot pink polish, or why your demure office mate stays away from all nail color? Find out in this fun nail color guide and see what your nail polish says about you!

Here’s a fun post. What’s your favorite nail polish color? Check out what it says about you by reading the rest of the article.
BTW: you can learn a whole lot more by checking out Chinese face reading and seeing what your face says about you, too.

Make your skin sing with L’Occitane Immortelle Brightening Moisture Mask

April 23rd, 2011

The mask uses organic essential oil derived from immortelle – a Corsican flower renowned for its ability to synthesize collagen and stimulate microcirculation – along with bellis perennis (a.k.a. daisy) extract, which has brightening properties.

For everyday skincare, 4 products and 1 minute twice a day is all it takes to have lovely skin. The only exception to this routine is the use of a mask, that naturally takes longer, but only gets used once a week – very nice, too, at the spa, as part of a relaxing visit. The right mask can brighten your face. I’ve been working on an organic one for a year now, and am close to launching it.

Pomegranates for Luminous, Ageless Skin

April 22nd, 2011

Pomegranate seed oil takes care of your skin from the outside and the inside. Pomegranate seed oil works on the outside to minimize the appearance of lines and signs of aging; internally, pomegranate seed oil is a dietary supplement rich in healthy dietary fats and omega-3’s. Naturally, a diet rich in healthy fats, vitamins, and anti-oxidants gives skin the building blocks it needs to look radiant and young.

The pomegranate has been in cultivation for thousands of years. There is evidence to support claims that it has been in cultivation since 3000 BC. And it has not gone unnoticed. The pomegranate shows up in the Bible, in Egyptian tombs, and in eastern and western works of art. Some texts suggest that it was the pomegranate in the Garden of Eden that tempted Eve, rather than the apple.

The truth behind the myths may be elusive, but the health and beauty benefits of pomegranate are established facts. In 2006, the University of Michigan published a study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology that highlighted the rebuilding effects of pomegranate seed oil when used topically on the skin. Pomegranate seed oil stimulates the production of collagen and the proliferation of skin cells. Collagen is an important structural protein that is present in the connective tissues of skin cells. As collagen breaks down, skin starts to look thin and dry and fine lines appear. Using pomegranate seed oil as part of a moisturizing routine helps to rebuild collagen and stimulates skin cells to produce firm, youthful skin.

Pomegranates have a thick, leathery red skin that holds hundreds of seeds surrounded by juicy, red fruit. The pomegranate is certainly abundant in seed production; it is no surprise that it was an ancient fertility symbol. Plus the seeds are full of vitamins and antioxidants that are just as available in the form of an oil, or directly as you eat the red fruit around them.

Pomegranate seed oil is particularly good for mature skin. The oil acts to plump up the skin cells, which minimizes fine lines and firms and tightens the skin. Pomegranate seed oil revitalizes dry skin, adding a healthy glow. And you only need a small amount to get the benefits. Pomegranate seed oil, added to face creams, body creams, and lotions, adds important elements that slow aging, adds luster to the complexion, and reverses free radical damage.

A pomegranate has a lot to offer: as a delicious fruit; a nutritious source of vitamins and anti-oxidants; and as a healthy oil for the skin and body. Healthy skin starts on the inside, but taking care of the outside is just as important.

With so many good qualities, it is no wonder the pomegranate has been so popular for so long.

Get Clearer Skin With This Pore-Purifying Toner

April 22nd, 2011

Balancing Skin Tonic is an alcohol-free toner that works within the pores to destroy acne-causing bacteria, manage oiliness and calm breakouts and inflammation without the dryness and irritation often associated with problem skin toners. Steam distillation is used to create this therapeutic Witch Hazel skin tonic for healthy and clearer-looking skin.

Here is a good post about the benefits of a good toner, especially one based on witch hazel. It points out that most witch hazel contains alcohol (usually about 15% by volume) and how important it is to use a product that is alcohol free. I use a lot of alcohol-free witch hazel, infused with other botanicals, in my facial toner. I use lots of organic rose water also, as this complements the witch hazel in cleansing and toning the skin (it also smells way better than witch hazel!)
